About The Team
In RDP, we aim to describe the world of scientific research as accurately as possible by profiling a wide range of entities, from People and Organizations to research artefacts such as Publications and Grants all the way to topics and concepts that characterize what research is about. Our entity-linking and disambiguation systems integrate data from diverse sources, including millions of research articles, to deliver market-leading performance. The RDP team is large, full of talented people, and highly cross-functional and collaborative: As a data scientist, you will collaborate closely with software engineers, analysts, product managers, and architects on selected areas of focus, and be part of the wider RDP Data Science team.At Elsevier, we help the world of research to make high-value decisions with confidence through a rich portfolio of services and products such as Scopus, Pure, and SciVal. The high-quality connected data and insights that these products provide come from our Research Data Platform (RDP), the data powerhouse of Elsevier’s analytics business. We are looking for a data scientist (DS-III) to join our RDP team and further advance our entity extraction and linking capabilities.
About The Role
As a data scientist, you will join RDP’s Organization Domain: a cross-functional team focused on accurately identifying and describing all organisations (like universities) and organisational units (such as faculties and departments) that are active in the world of research. You will work on extracting mentions of these entities from text and linking and clustering them to other entities to enhance Elsevier’s products. Your responsibilities include improving the quality of entity extraction, clustering, and linking, collaborating with engineers, architects, product managers, and other data scientists within the Organization Domain to continuously improve our best-in-class disambiguation systems. This involves data integration from diverse sources, including millions of research artefacts. With trustworthy research products being vital to Elsevier’s success, there is a strong focus on measuring and improving data quality and coverage. Additionally, you will maintain and develop scalable systems and models to handle increasing data volumes. We tackle some of the hardest data science challenges to solve pressing customer needs and we are looking for a talented, enthusiastic, and collaborative colleague to join our ranks.

Responsibilities
- Passionate about creating value for customers by interconnecting data and improving quality and richness at scale.
- Enjoys working collaboratively as part of a team to achieve common goals and eager to contribute ideas.
- Willing to learn new skills and develop practical solutions to technical challenges.
- Loves diving into data to explore new ways to improve extraction/linking performance.
- Hands-on experience developing (components of) large-scale data science solutions.
- Preferably, a formal qualification in computer science, computational linguistics, data science, machine learning, or related quantitative disciplines.
- Demonstrable coding skills in Python.
- Knowledge of applying NLP techniques and ML algorithms. GenAI/LLM expertise is welcome.
- Experience with databases, NoSQL data stores, and SQL.
- Experience with Databricks and Spark.
