ABOUT MERLIN AI
Merlin AI is an early stage construction tech company based in Bangalore. We build operational intelligence software for trade contractors and manufacturers helping them keep materials, labour, and decisions aligned across complex real world projects.

ABOUT THE ROLE
We are looking for a Full Stack Engineer who is strong at the fundamentals and moves fast without cutting corners. You will work across the entire stack from building responsive frontends to designing scalable backend systems and you will be expected to own what you build end to end.

This is not a role for someone who waits to be told what to do. We want someone who spots problems before they are raised, proposes solutions before they are asked for, and ships things that work from day one.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

Frontend
• Build fast, clean, and responsive interfaces using React.js and Next.js
• Own the user experience end to end, from component design to performance optimisation
• Work closely with product and design to turn requirements into something people actually enjoy using.

Backend
• Design and build robust APIs and services using Java, Kotlin, or Python
• Build and maintain event-driven systems using Kafka for real-time data processing
• Ensure your code is clean, well-tested, and built to scale from the start

Databases
• Work across both MongoDB and PostgreSQL depending on the use case
• Design schemas and queries that are efficient and built for the long term
• Take ownership of data integrity and performance at the database level

Infrastructure & DevOps
• Deploy and manage services on AWS with a good understanding of cloud architecture
• Containerise applications using Docker and manage them with Kubernetes
• Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines that keep deployments fast and reliable
• Monitor systems proactively and fix issues before they become outages

Engineering Standards
• Write code that others can read, maintain, and build on
• Participate in code reviews and hold the team to a high bar
• Contribute to architecture decisions and help the team make the right long-term calls

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

Technical Skills
• 3 or more years of hands-on full stack experience across frontend and backend
• Strong with React.js and Next.js. You have shipped real products with these
• Solid backend experience in Java, Kotlin, or Python
• Practical experience with Kafka, MongoDB, and PostgreSQL in production environments
• Comfortable with Docker, Kubernetes, and AWS
• Experience setting up or maintaining CI/CD pipelines

Fundamentals
• Very strong in data structures and algorithms. You solve problems from first principles, not from memory
• Solid understanding of system design, both high level and low level
• Able to design systems that are scalable, reliable, and maintainable under real world conditions
• Strong debugging instincts. You find the root cause, not just the symptom

• You ask the right questions early and flag risks before they become problems
• You take full ownership of your work, from writing the code to making sure it runs well in production
• Comfortable working in a fast-moving startup where things change and priorities shift
• A strong communicator who keeps the team informed without being asked

NICE TO HAVE
• Experience with Redis for caching or session management
• Familiarity with GraphQL alongside REST APIs
• Exposure to observability tools like Datadog, Grafana, or Prometheus
• Experience with WebSockets or real-time data streaming
• Prior experience in construction tech, logistics, or operations-heavy domains
