HR Data Engineer
We have an opportunity for a Data Engineer, passionate about people and what drives them. You’ll join a global team of technology experts and engineers in this exciting new field where Data Science and Business Intelligence meet Human Resources and Psychology of the workplace.
Reporting to the Data Management Program Lead, you will support global business in designing and continuously improving data services that solve complex business problems and deliver actionable insights. Your work will focus on building accurate, scalable, and maintainable data products that empower decision-making across the organization.
The HR function supports over 47 000 employees in 35 countries globally and operates out of three business hubs in Brisbane, Perth and Montreal. Data science roles have diverse, multi-industry backgrounds and comprehensive skills in the fields of data modelling, engineering, and visualization as well as advanced analytics techniques including machine learning and optimization. These skills are used to turn data into information that can be used to make improved decisions and generate competitive advantage for Rio Tinto.
The HR Advanced Analytics and Data Science team is part of the Rio Tinto cross-functional Data Science Community of Excellence. You will be encouraged to collaborate and to be continually improving and sharing your software engineering skills to write good quality, testable, maintainable code that can be deployed to production systems with little refactoring. Reporting to the Data Management Program Lead, you will support global business in designing and continuously improving data services that solve complex business problems and deliver actionable insights. - Designing and architecting robust data models that accurately reflect business processes and integrate data from multiple enterprise systems
- Building and optimizing scalable data pipelines to ensure high-quality, reliable data delivery for AI and predictive data analytics
- Implement data validation, testing and quality assurance processes to ensure accuracy and consistency
- Ensuring data accuracy and optimization across people data by implementing testing, validation and quality assurance processes
- Collaborate with stakeholders to design customer-driven data products aligned with business needs.
- Develop reproducible data workflows and platforms that support transparency and auditability of analytical outcomes
- Modernize ETL processes from traditional systems and legacy methods to improve data consistency, accessibility and efficiency
- Ensure best-in-class practices for developing and deploying data products including CI/CD and version control
- Share solutions and best practice with other team members and the wider organization to foster a culture of data-driven decision making
- Bachelor’s / master’s degree in computer science, Engineering, Mathematics, or related fields, combined with several years of experience in data engineering projects
- 5+ years of experience in data engineering, data modelling, or data architecture
- Expertise in relational data models (SQL, Python), including deployment, data modelling, schema design, CDC, stored procedures, and SCD types
- Strong understanding of big data ecosystems and cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Databricks
- Knowledge of data product lifecycles, including testing, UAT, and production deployments
- Familiarity with CI/CD processes, such as version control and automated deployment pipelines to ensure reproducibility and consistency
- Data pipeline automation and ETL development using tools such as GitHub actions, DBT, Azure Data Factory, Airflow, Pentaho, etc
- Excellent communication, stakeholder engagement, and problem-solving skills.
