Job Overview

As the Lead Software Development Engineer for the Direct Advisory Suite (Planning) at Morningstar, you serve as the technical voice and guiding force for a stream-aligned development team responsible for delivering a suite of client-facing applications. These applications are built using modern frameworks, tools, programming languages, and cloud technologies—driven by a passionate and skilled team. This role oversees the end-to-end software development lifecycle—from design and implementation to maintenance—while ensuring scalability, minimizing technical debt, and aligning with strategic business goals.

Team Overview

In this position, you’ll work closely with stakeholders, scrum masters, designers, and developers to create robust technology solutions for Morningstar’s Financial Planning platform. You are expected to have strong hands-on experience with JavaScript frameworks (such as Vue.js), as well as .NET, Java, and SQL. Familiarity with component-based architectures and the ability to build scalable, adaptable systems are essential. Your responsibilities will include developing new components, maintaining and enhancing existing systems, and navigating enterprise-level complexities to deliver modern, efficient software solutions. Gaining a deep understanding of current systems and the databases will be important.

Responsibilities:

• Lead the development team. Guide and drive the team comprised of backend and front end developers
• Think ahead of team, highlight problems and risk and come up with solutions
• Be responsible for product commitment, functioning and deliveries
• Design & develop web and enterprise solutions to be flexible, scalable & extensible.
• Improve complex data flow, data structures and db design to move to next platform.
• Be a Role Model to the team to collaborate on good object oriented designs & domain modeling. Enforce good agile practices like test driven development, Continuous Integration.
• Hands-on development will be an integral part of the responsibilities.
• Develop areas of continuous and automated deployment.
• Introduce and follow good development practices, innovative frameworks and technology solutions that help business move faster.
• Follow best practices like estimation, planning, reporting and improvement brought to processes in every day work.
  
  
  

Requirements: These are the most important skills, qualities, etc. that we’d like for this role.

• 7-10 years of expertized experience in JavaScript framework/libraries – Vue.js, OOJS, HTML, CSS, JQuery, AJAX, Cross Browser Compatibility, Responsive Designs, Single Page Application (SPA)
• At least 4 years’ experience of leading a team of backend and frontend developers.
• Very Strong knowledge of databases and hands-on experience in any of the following databases - MS SQL, Dynamo DB, PostgreSQL, .
• Expert in building RESTful WS.
• Experience on Java and .Net technologies with exposure to the following frameworks - MVC etc.
• Expert in building using Jenkins, Maven, SonarQube, code quality analysis
• Experience with application scaffolding tools, automation & development tools, and dependency management (e.g. NPM, Grunt)
• Expert in Software Security, static code analysis, and preventing vulnerabilities
• Expert in analysis, design, coding, and implementation of large-scale, n-tier Java and .NET-based platforms.
• Expert in OOPs, Design Patterns, Development standards, and best practices
• Knowledge of Cloud Computing AWS
• Be aware of activity in the open source world. Contributing back to open source is a big plus.
• Participation in full life-cycle system development with teams of developers, analysts, and testers.
• Experience with modern development practices through AI in areas of Product design, Requirement Analysis, Test Driven Development, Automation & Unit Testing in a product development environment.
