Overview
We are looking for an exceptional Principal Data Scientist - B2C / Customer to lead the development of intelligent, customer-centric machine learning systems at Aplazo. This is a high-impact role at the intersection of data science, product, and engineering, ideal for a hands-on technical leader passionate about personalization, customer insights, and AI-powered experiences.
You will drive end-to-end model development across the customer lifecycle- from acquisition to engagement, retention, and growth. The ideal candidate combines a deep understanding of advanced ML/DL techniques with strong product intuition and the ability to influence strategic decisions through data-driven experimentation. You will also mentor a growing team of data scientists and collaborate with engineering, product, and growth teams to deliver scalable, business-impacting ML solutions.
Responsibilities
You will drive end-to-end model development across the customer lifecycle- from acquisition to engagement, retention, and growth. The ideal candidate combines a deep understanding of advanced ML/DL techniques with strong product intuition and the ability to influence strategic decisions through data-driven experimentation. You will also mentor a growing team of data scientists and collaborate with engineering, product, and growth teams to deliver scalable, business-impacting ML solutions.
Responsibilities
- Customer-Centric ML Systems: Design and implement machine learning and deep learning models across the customer lifecycle, including: Personalization engines (e. g., product search, dynamic content), Recommendation systems (collaborative and content-based), Loyalty and Rewards optimisation, Referral system modelling, Customer Engagement, LTV Model, Churn/Retention models.
- Customer Acquisition & Marketing Optimization: Drive machine learning initiatives that directly impact customer acquisition and marketing ROI, including: Paid media spend optimization (audience segmentation, and budget allocation), Discounting and offer optimization(leveraging ML/DL/RL techniques to maximize LTV and profitability), Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC) modeling to track and optimize across different acquisition channels and lifecycle stages, Attribution modeling to better understand multi-touch impact of marketing and product-led growth initiatives.
- Conversational AI & Agentic Systems Architect and prototype next-generation Conversational AI experiences using LLMs, including: Task-oriented AI Assistants, Fine-tuned customer-facing chatbots. Fine-tune or prompt-engineer LLMs such as OpenAI GPT-4 Claude, or open-source models (e. g., LLaMA, Mistral, etc) for customer interaction flows. Evaluate model performance using dialogue quality metrics and real-world A/B testing. Work and implement systems with OpenAI Function Calling / Tools API, LangChain Toolkits, and have knowledge in setting up input/output Guardrails.
- Experimentation and Business Impact: Drive a rigorous experimentation culture using A/B testing, uplift modelling, and causal inference to quantify model impact. Translate complex modelling outcomes into business decisions that improve customer engagement, LTV, retention, and conversion rates.
- End-to-End Ownership of ML Initiatives: Own the full model lifecycle, from problem formulation, data acquisition, and modelling to evaluation, deployment, and monitoring. Collaborate with platform and MLOps teams to productionize models with robust testing, versioning, and monitoring.
- Thought Leadership & Mentorship: Mentor a high-performing team of data scientists and analysts. Evangelize customer science best practices across the organizationestablishing shared frameworks for modelling, documentation, and governance. Serve as a strategic advisor to product and marketing teams on data and ML strategy.
- Cross-Functional Leadership: Partner with Product, Growth, Engineering, Risk, and Customer Success teams to align modelling initiatives with company OKRs. Drive strategic alignment across Mexico, the USA, Chile, and Europe to ensure consistency and success of customer-facing ML initiatives.
- 5+ years of progressive experience in applied data science, machine learning, or advanced analytics, including 2+ years in a senior/lead-level role leading large-scale consumer-facing ML initiatives.
- Demonstrated success in developing and deploying machine learning models that drive measurable improvements in customer engagement, retention, and acquisition.
- Proven track record in delivering production-grade ML systems in domains such as personalization, recommendation, marketing optimization, and NLP.
- Strong experience working cross-functionally with Product, Marketing, Engineering, and Growth teams to translate business problems into scalable ML solutions.
- Advanced proficiency in Python, SQL, and commonly used ML and DL frameworks (e. g., TensorFlow, PyTorch, Scikit-learn, XGBoost, Transformers, Langchain, OpenAI APIs).
- Deep understanding of ML infrastructure and lifecycle tooling (e. g., MLflow, Vertex AI, SageMaker, or similar) and experience working with feature stores and automated deployment pipelines.
- Hands-on experience with large-scale data processing using tools such as Spark, BigQuery, or Snowflake.
- Strong foundation in experimental design, causal inference, A/B testing, and uplift modelling to evaluate and optimize marketing and product strategies.
- Expertise in customer segmentation, CLV modelling, attribution modelling, CAC analysis, and promotion effectiveness through statistical and ML techniques.
- Solid understanding of customer lifecycle dynamics and business KPIs in consumer internet, fintech, e-commerce, or subscription-based platforms.
- Experience working with marketing platforms, ad tech data, and customer-level telemetry to optimize paid media, referrals, and retention campaigns.
- Proven ability to lead interdisciplinary data science teams, mentor senior ICs, and influence both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- A disciplined approach to model documentation, reproducibility, collaboration, and agile development in a team-oriented environment.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate complex modelling concepts into strategic recommendations for executive leadership.
