Thomson Reuters is looking for a Software Engineer with AI Prompting experience to join our Skills team, working on the CoCounsel platform.
About the Role:
In this opportunity as a Software Engineer, Legal Prompter, CoCounsel AI Assistant, you will:
- We are seeking an experienced backend engineer to join the team behind CoCounsel. As a Software Engineer on the CoCounsel Skills team, you will help build applications that interact with state-of-the-art Large Language Models (LLMs) that deliver cutting-edge and time-saving solutions to attorneys all around the country.
- CoCounsel is already capable of writing legal research memos, summarizing and reviewing documents, creating timelines, and producing briefs and reports, just to name a few capabilities--all in minutes, not days or weeks. And we're just getting started.
- The ideal candidate will develop Python code to help test, evaluate, and improve the performance of our Skills offerings, ensuring that CoCounsel continues to provide world-class support to legal professionals.
- The role will combine a mix of writing high-quality code, developing robust tests and evaluation metrics, and working with cutting edge tools to evaluate AI outputs.
- Our ideal candidate has a software engineering background with the ability to write high-quality Python, work with APIs (consuming and serving), and experience with AI models. Experience with evaluation and benchmarking AI applications is preferred, along with some domain knowledge of the law (JD, legal industry experience, etc.).
- Develop Python code that interacts with state-of-the-art LLMs
- Create evaluation suites that test our AI skills against a wide range of inputs and validate that the outputs are accurate and complete
- Develop Python code that interacts with data sources & services (APIs, SQL databases, etc.)
- Provide code and prompting fixes for bugs and issues reported internal and external users
- Liaise with legal professionals and other teams at Thomson Reuters to gather and understand requirements
- Work with Trust team to create new tests and evaluations for CoCounsel skills
- Integrate the language models into multi-step systems, assessing their performance and making necessary modifications
- Engage with CoCounsel customers to triage issues and understand requirements for new features and functionality
You're a fit for the role of Software Engineer, Legal Prompter, CoCounsel AI Assistant if your background includes:
- One to two years of production level experience in software engineering on an engineering/product team, preferably at a startup
- Proficiency in Python - if Python skills are low, then strong experience in other programming languages is necessary
- Experience using large language models through code is preferred (such as model services from OpenAI, Anthropic, or Cohere; and/or open source models such as Llama and Mistral)
- Background with testing and evaluation of AI applications and understanding of AI benchmarks is preferred.
- Proficiency with APIs and SQL is a major plus
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work both independently and in a collaborative environment
- Experience in customer-facing roles and ability to engage with clients
