Software Engineer & POC Specialist – IBM Decision Runtime for z/OS

Introduction

IBM Decision Runtime for z/OS (DRz) is a technically advanced hybrid product built on a Java foundation and extended with C, COBOL, PL/I, and PL/X components to fully harness the power of the z/OS platform. As a distributed solution operating in a mainframe environment, its initial setup and Proof of Concept (POC) phases are often complex and pivotal to customer success.

Your Role And Responsibilities

This role is primarily focused on product development, but with a strong emphasis on providing technical leadership and deep expertise during early-stage POC engagements. The employee will work closely with IBM technical sales teams—who lead the customer-facing mission—to ensure that prospects receive the configuration support, troubleshooting guidance, and product insight needed to get started smoothly and confidently.

From the development team’s perspective, this role serves as the technical anchor during these engagements.

In addition to supporting POCs, the selected candidate contributes directly to the evolution of DRz, developing new features and strengthening its integration with emerging technologies, including machine learning.

Key Responsibilities

• Contribute to feature development, particularly around ML integration and runtime enhancements
• Provide technical leadership and hands-on support for customer POCs and onboarding efforts
• Act as the primary technical contact from the development team during early customer engagements
• Ensure DRz is configured and demonstrated effectively in competitive and evaluation scenarios

Master's Degree

Required Technical And Professional Expertise

• Strong working knowledge of the z/OS platform, including:
• SMPE packaging and installation
• ISPF, SDSF, USS (via SSH), JCL, and dataset management
• Experience with C, COBOL, PL/I, and PL/X programming
• Excellent communication and documentation skills for cross-site collaboration
  

Preferred Technical And Professional Experience

• Familiarity with business rules engines or decision automation
• Java programming experience, especially in hybrid or embedded environments
• Experience supporting or executing customer POCs in enterprise environments
