About the Role:
We are seeking a highly experienced Staff Software Engineer to serve as a senior individual contributor and technical anchor on our engineering team. In this role, you will operate at the intersection of deep technical execution and broad architectural vision - making foundational decisions that shape the long-term trajectory of our platform. You will work across system boundaries to identify and resolve structural risks, define engineering standards, and establish durable patterns that raise the quality and consistency of work across the team.
This is not a management role. You will remain hands-on - writing production code, leading complex technical investigations, and driving critical features from concept through deployment. But your scope extends beyond any single system or project: you will be expected to hold a platform-level view, proactively influence technical direction, and serve as a force multiplier for the engineers around you.
Key Responsibilities:
Define and own the long-term technical architecture of our platform, making high-stakes decisions on system boundaries, data flow patterns, service design, and integration strategy.
Lead the assessment and modernization of legacy systems, bringing principled judgment to decisions about when to refactor, replace, extend, or isolate existing architecture - and building the roadmap to execute on those decisions.
Establish and steward engineering standards across the team: architecture patterns, code quality expectations, testing strategies, documentation practices, and review norms.
Serve as a technical authority and thought partner across engineering - providing guidance on complex design problems, elevating technical decision-making, and actively developing the judgment of less experienced engineers.
Develop deep fluency in the business domain - including operations workflows, fulfillment systems, client requirements, and executive priorities - and ensure technical strategy is tightly aligned with business outcomes.
Proactively surface systemic risks, technical debt, and compounding inefficiencies across the platform, and drive the organizational will to address them.
Partner with stakeholders across operations, product, and leadership to translate complex technical tradeoffs into clear, actionable decisions.
Qualifications:
6-12+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a demonstrated track record of delivering and maintaining production systems at scale - including systems with significant operational, business, or reliability stakes.
Proven experience operating as a senior IC at or above the staff level: setting technical direction, influencing engineering culture, and driving cross-cutting improvements without a management mandate.
Deep expertise in software architecture and system design, including the ability to reason across service boundaries, data models, integration patterns, and long-term platform evolution.
A strong record of working effectively within complex, legacy-heavy codebases - diagnosing systemic issues, designing incremental improvement paths, and executing on large-scale modernisation efforts with minimal disruption.
Exceptional communication skills, with demonstrated ability to convey complex technical tradeoffs to both engineering peers and non-technical business stakeholders - and to build alignment around difficult decisions.
High ownership orientation: self-directed, accountable, and comfortable operating with significant autonomy in ambiguous or fast-moving environments.
Hands on experience in C# / .NET, PostgreSQL , five local applications, legacy APIs, hundreds of database functions, cloud infrastructure, DevOps, system design and architecture.
Production systems at scale. Legacy codebase modernization. Cross-system architecture decisions. Setting engineering standards. Diagnosing systemic issues and designing incremental improvement paths.
Nice to Have:
Deep experience in database architecture, query optimisation, and data pipeline design (PostgreSQL preferred).
Background in cloud infrastructure, DevOps, or platform/reliability engineering.
Prior experience in operations technology, logistics, supply chain, or device lifecycle management industries (WMS, IMS, ERP, etc.).
Experience designing and maintaining systems that serve both internal operational users and external client-facing interfaces, with an understanding of the divergent requirements each brings.
A track record of defining engineering standards, technical strategy, or platform roadmaps at an organisational level.
