Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced QA Leader to spearhead quality assurance for our enterprise database products built on PostgreSQL and related technologies. In this role, you will define and execute comprehensive test strategies spanning functional validation, automation, performance benchmarking, and resilience testing. You will lead a team of QA engineers, establish quality standards, and ensure our database products meet the highest levels of reliability, security, and performance before release.
The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in database internals, SQL-level testing, and a proven track record of building scalable test frameworks for complex data infrastructure. You are equally comfortable designing test plans and writing automation code, and you thrive in environments where quality is a competitive advantage.
Key Responsibilities
Test Strategy & Planning
- Define and own the end-to-end QA strategy for database products, covering functional, regression, performance, resilience, and security testing.
- Develop comprehensive test plans and traceability matrices for features such as replication, partitioning, backup/restore, encryption (TDE), auditing, and connection pooling.
- Establish release quality gates and acceptance criteria aligned with enterprise-grade product standards.
- Collaborate with product management and engineering to influence product quality from the design phase.
- Design, build, and maintain scalable test automation frameworks for database validation using tools such as Python, Shell scripting, SQL, and CI/CD pipelines.
- Implement automated regression suites covering SQL compatibility, data integrity, schema migrations, and cross-version upgrade testing.
- Integrate automated tests into CI/CD workflows (Jenkins, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI) for continuous quality feedback.
- Drive adoption of test automation best practices, including data-driven testing, parameterized test configurations, and automated report generation.
- Plan and execute performance benchmarks using industry-standard tools such as HammerDB (TPC-C/TPC-H), pgbench, sysbench, and custom workloads.
- Conduct performance regression analysis across database versions, identifying degradation root causes and optimizing configurations.
- Monitor and collect system-level metrics (CPU, memory, I/O, WAL throughput) during benchmarks to correlate with database performance indicators.
- Produce detailed performance reports with actionable recommendations for engineering teams.
- Design and implement resilience testing frameworks covering failover, disaster recovery, data durability, and high-availability scenarios.
- Apply chaos engineering principles to simulate node failures, network partitions, storage degradation, and resource exhaustion in database clusters.
- Validate data consistency and recovery procedures under adverse conditions, ensuring zero data loss guarantees.
- Develop resilience certification criteria and scorecards for release readiness.
- Lead manual testing efforts for complex database features where automation coverage is evolving, including edge cases in SQL parsing, transaction isolation, and concurrency control.
- Conduct exploratory testing sessions to uncover defects in new features, security configurations, and upgrade paths.
- Review and validate database documentation, user guides, and operational runbooks for technical accuracy.
- Lead, mentor, and grow a team of QA engineers, fostering a culture of quality ownership and continuous improvement.
- Coordinate cross-functional testing efforts across development, DevOps, security, and product teams.
- Manage test environments, infrastructure provisioning, and resource planning for testing initiatives.
- Report quality metrics, test coverage, and risk assessments to senior leadership and stakeholders.
