The Role Newcastle University invites applications for a Research Software Engineer to join the EPSRC-funded National EdgeAI Hub for Real Data. This role will contribute to Work Stream 5, focusing on the validation of data-sensitive applications in edge AI, addressing challenges in cybersecurity, data quality, and real-time AI performance. This research hub, tackles the intricate challenges of cyber-disturbances and data quality in Edge Computing (EC) environments supporting AI algorithms. The role involves close collaboration with a diverse and multidisciplinary team across the UK to validate the edge AI innovations in critical sectors such as healthcare, transport, and energy security. The role will naturally integrate with other research streams within the consortium, providing opportunities for cross-stream collaboration and engagement with both academic and industrial partners. Key Accountabilities Conduct research into data-sensitive applications for validating edge AI technologies within the sectors of health, transport, energy, and others (e.g. predictive models for air quality, forecasting across urban geosensor networks). Develop and validate software solutions that improve data quality and the robustness of AI models against cyber-disturbances. Engage with industry partners and stakeholders to co-develop edge AI validation methodologies, contribute to pilot studies, and ensure alignment between research outcomes and real-world deployment challenges. Disseminate research findings through publications, workshops, and conferences. Contribute to the delivery of pump-priming projects and integrator projects, ensuring timely completion of deliverables and milestones. Support the production of open-source resources, including software, reports, and online content such as interactive podcasts. The Person Knowledge, Skills and Experience The candidate should have a bachelor’s degree in computer science or equivalent. Candidate must have experience in using LiDAR data for autonomous vehicles or equivalent application. Candidate must have knowledge of Deep Learning Architectures and Training. Candidate must be able to program in python. Desirable Candidate should have experience in working in with industry. Candidate should be skills of presentation, communication and working in team. Candidate should have skills of report writing. Candidate should have skills of research methods. Attributes and Behaviour Strong communication and interpersonal skills, capable of disseminating research to both academic and industrial audiences.
