Your Team Responsibilities
The selected candidate will join the Sustainability & Climate (S&C) Engineering team, which is responsible for designing and building cloud-native, distributed systems that process large volumes of sustainability and climate data.
The team focuses on delivering high-performance, data-intensive platforms that power analytics, reporting, and client-facing applications across MSCI’s global Sustainability & Climate product suite.
As part of this group, the engineer will contribute to:
- Building modern microservice architectures using Java and Spring Boot.
- Developing scalable cloud solutions on GCP or Azure for data ingestion, aggregation, and distribution.
- Implementing cutting-edge data engineering and compute frameworks to process large datasets efficiently and securely.
- Advancing the platform’s automation, resilience, and performance while ensuring compliance and data integrity.
The team operates in a collaborative, agile environment—continuously innovating to build a world-class cloud platform that supports the evolving Sustainability & Climate business.
Your Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain scalable Java 17 and Spring Boot microservices for data-intensive applications within the Sustainability & Climate platform.
- Architect and implement distributed systems and APIs capable of processing large datasets efficiently in a cloud-native environment (GCP or Azure).
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including data engineering, DevOps, and product management, to deliver high-quality, reliable, and secure solutions.
- Own end-to-end delivery of assigned modules — from design, coding, and testing to deployment and post-production support.
- Contribute to system design discussions, ensuring scalability, resilience, and alignment with platform architecture standards.
- Implement best practices for performance optimization, security, and observability across cloud-native services.
- Manage and enhance data catalog, data lake, and distributed processing components supporting Sustainability & Climate analytics.
- Mentor junior engineers, review code, and promote engineering excellence within the team.
- 7+ years of hands-on experience in Java software development, with strong proficiency in Java 17 and Spring Boot.
- Proven expertise in designing and implementing microservice-based architectures for large-scale, data-driven platforms.
- Solid experience working with public cloud platforms such as Google Cloud Platform (GCP) or Microsoft Azure.
- Strong understanding of distributed systems, data-intensive applications, and bulk data processing frameworks.
- Familiarity with data lake architectures, catalog management, and distributed compute technologies (e.g., Spark).
- Experience with NoSQL databases, as well as relational database systems.
- Working knowledge of Docker, containerization, and CI/CD pipelines.
- Competence in unit testing, integration testing, and modern development practices.
- Excellent problem-solving, debugging, and communication skills.
- Exposure to DevOps practices and cloud automation is an added advantage.
