Role Overview
As a Cloud Operations Engineer, you will play a key role in managing daily BAU (Business-As-Usual) operations, ensuring availability, performance, and cost-effectiveness of our clients’ cloud environments. The role offers responsibilities across support, monitoring, automation, and security.
Key Responsibilities
1. Cloud Infrastructure Management
- Monitor EC2, S3, RDS (AWS) or Azure VMs, Storage, Managed DBs
- Run standard health checks and follow pre-defined runbooks
- Ensure uptime of core services
- Optimize usage (e.g., VM sizing, storage tiering)
- Handle escalations and root cause analysis
- Apply infrastructure changes with change management
2. Support & Incident Management
- Respond to alerts and tickets
- Categorize and escalate unresolved issues
- Perform basic troubleshooting
- Lead critical incident resolution
- Coordinate with platform vendors
- Identify and act on recurring issues
3. Deployment & CI/CD Support
- Assist in deployments and monitor scripts
- Follow routine update instructions
- Manage CI/CD pipelines (e.g., Jenkins, GitHub Actions)
- Work with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, ARM)
- Collaborate with Dev teams for seamless deployments
4. Monitoring & Reporting
- Monitor using CloudWatch, Azure Monitor
- Generate uptime and usage reports
- Design dashboards and custom alerts
- Analyze trends and suggest improvements
5. User & Access Management
- Create/delete users, assign basic roles
- Enforce tagging and naming policies
- Design secure access policies
- Conduct periodic access audits
6. Documentation & SOPs
- Maintain runbooks and incident logs
- Record actions and resolutions
- Update documentation with version control
- Create knowledge base articles
7. Security & Compliance Operations
- Run hygiene checks (open ports, unused resources)
- Execute patching per SOP
- Use tools like Defender, Inspector, Pingsafe
- Remediate findings and automate workflows
- Support security audits and CIS benchmarks
8. Automation & Optimization (L1+ Only)
- Write automation scripts (PowerShell, Python, Azure CLI, Boto3)
- Automate reporting, access provisioning, and daily tasks
- Identify & implement cost optimizations
9. Cost Analysis & Optimization
- Monitor cloud costs and detect usage spikes
- Ensure tagging for cost tracking
- Shut down non-prod resources as scheduled
- Use AWS Cost Explorer / Azure Cost Management
- Recommend Reserved Instances, tiering & savings plans
- Create cost dashboards and work with teams to control budgets
Required Skills & Tools
- AWS Console / Azure Portal
- IAM, RBAC, CloudWatch, Azure Monitor
- CI/CD Tools (e.g., GitHub, Jenkins, Azure DevOps)
- Scripting (PowerShell, Bash, Python preferred)
- Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, CloudFormation, ARM)
- Monitoring & Security Tools (e.g., Defender, Pingsafe, AWS Inspector)
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, IT or relevant field
- Relevant AWS / Azure certifications preferred (e.g., Cloud Practitioner, SysOps, Administrator Associate)
