Overview
Who are we?
At Affinity Answers, we call ourselves a consumer data company finding affinities that you have towards a brand (although it is a lot more complex than that). If you have seen ads when you visit some websites, it is likely that we have played a part in deciding if you have an affinity towards the advertiser’s brand. We are more than a decade old company based out of Austin, Texas - with the entire engineering center in Bangalore (now spread across India).
Whom are we looking for?
We are looking for a (data) storyteller because data tells but story sells. We have disparate datasets, which have the data of consumer behavior - say what consumers are interested on social media to where they visit to what they purchase. We need someone who likes to weave a story out of it, a story that resonates with the brands, a story that tells the untold, a story that reinforces pop culture. You must have some liking for consumer behavior and definitely a liking for data analysis and visualizations. Sometimes a Data Analysts’ job is similar to a Data Journalist - deep dive based on hypothesis for facts (data) and see if it is worth publishing (presenting).
What skill set is essential for this role?
- SQL, SQL, SQL - you must know the basics thoroughly
- Basic understanding of Data Analysis using spreadsheets
- Data visualizations using some tool, say Google Spreadsheet or Tableau - tools don’t matter, but knowing to produce on one matters
- A bias for analysis as soon as you see data and be skeptical about hypothesis till data proves
- Understanding of basic descriptive statistics, such as being able to identify an ‘outlier’ in a dataset
- Ability to present the story you found (backed by data) using modern presentation tools (Microsoft Powerpoint is not passé, but anything newer would be better)
- A familiarity with some programming language will make you more productive, so it is desirable, but not a must to begin with
Whom will you work with?
Data Engineers, Analytics Engineers, Product Managers, Researchers, veterans in consumer data analysis - you will learn a lot.
