Overview
Job Purpose (Significance of the role & Objectives)
We are seeking a Senior Test Engineer to significantly advance our understanding of battery performance. In this crucial role, you'll independently design, execute, and oversee end-to-end test plans to thoroughly evaluate battery behaviors and pinpoint the key variables influencing our findings. You will be instrumental in driving insights that directly impact battery optimization and innovation.
You'll be responsible for analyzing extensive test data, conducting detailed dissection of modules and packs to identify and confirm degradation mechanisms, and providing comprehensive reports on your results. A key aspect of this role involves proactively proposing and executing additional designs of experiments to continually deepen our research into specific phenomena, acting as a technical expert who guides the research direction
Key Responsibilities and Deliverables
- Lead the execution and maintenance of complex battery tests using a wide array of equipment, including life cycle equipment, temperature/humidity chambers, and specialized fixturing.
- Execute and supervise advanced thermal and mechanical tests, such as overheating, thermal shock, thermal propagation, drop tests, nail penetration, vibration, mechanical shock, and water immersion, ensuring adherence to safety protocols and quality standards.
- Develop comprehensive test plans, propose sophisticated designs of experiments (DOEs), and author detailed, insightful test reports that clearly communicate findings and recommendations.
- Leverage in-depth test data to optimize module and pack lifetime, strategically adjusting usage parameters like charge/discharge rates and ambient conditions based on empirical evidence.
- Apply advanced data manipulation and visualization techniques using tools like MATLAB or similar software to analyze large datasets and effectively convey complex test results to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Develop and refine predictive models to simulate battery performance at the beginning of life and throughout the aging process.
- Conduct detailed cell-level dissection analysis to accurately identify and characterize mechanisms of energy and power losses.
- Act as a key technical contributor within cross-functional product development teams, providing expert input on ideal cell chemistry and design for electric vehicle applications.
- Design, set up professional Data Acquisition (DAQ) systems, and lead the execution of comprehensive cell/battery pack testing, including performance, durability, and fleet validation tests, from conception to completion.
- Proactively troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues that arise during testing, implementing effective solutions and preventative measures.
- Provide guidance and expertise in sensor instrumentation and data acquisition systems to team members, ensuring best practices. Mentor junior engineers on best practices for test execution, data analysis, and problem-solving, without having formal management responsibilities.
Desired Qualifications: Required Qualification, Knowledge, and Experience
- Extensive experience (4+ Years) working with diverse cell chemistries, possessing a deep understanding of design tradeoffs and staying current with cutting-edge battery technology.
